This thread will include all of my WIPs, seeing as I don't want to post them in different topics. Please scroll to the end of the topic to find the newest progress, I will not keep updating the first post to display new pictures. Thanky you, enjoy!

1. MG MSM-03 Gogg

Well, I'm not really a fan of posting WIPs but progress has been slow and I need something to keep me going. The following are pictures of the assembled kit before any modifications were made.

In case anyone asks, the sanding of the bigger parts was in fact necessary. I usually don't do this but there were quite a few areas with 'scarring' (if that's what you would call it) that needed attention. Here's a run down of what's been done since these pictures were taken last thursday and what still needs to be done.

Done:

- general parts clean up
- 60% of additional panel line scribing
- puttying of seam lines
- preparations for LED installation in head

'To Do':

- remaining panel lines
- adding miscellanious details
- sanding off excess putty
- purchasing remaining parts for LED installation

After that it's off to the painting phase, but that might not be before next weekend. I can't post more images now (of scribed panel lines, etc.) because it's too dark already and I hate crappy pictures - I'll post them tomorrow. Give me some feedback, ask question and the like.

Cheers!

Really looking forward to seeing your WIP on this kit. I'm particularly interested in seeing the additional details your going to add to the Gogg, especially the panel line scribing and LED installation.

Some of the larger pieces do tend to get that wierd sort of warping of colours, yeah.

Are you planning on having everything internal, battery and all, or will you have trailing cables? If you're storing stuff inside, would you mind showing a pic. of where you scooped him out? I've been planning on having LEDs fully internal in future, but I can't decide what to chop out to make room.
That, and I can't find switches small enough in my local Maplins.

Regardless, nice to see a Gogg being done; he doesn't get enough love.

The Gogg is unique in that it is predestined for an LED installation. There's no need for mods to the internal frame 'cause it's already hollow - it needs to be for the arm-retracting-gimmick to work. What I'm doing is very basic, basically the same thing that Gamera did in this tutorial. It's tough to make room on other Gundams, that's true. This guy's getting plenty of love from me, one of my favorite MGs!

As for the sand blasting, it does look rough but primer covers all of that. It actually feels quite smooth.
Additional details will be quite simple things that make all the difference, you'll see. ;)

Double post, but I have something for you guys. I just got back from work, the sun is shining and I took some pictures.

Let's start off with general panel lining, you can see scratches here and there that I filled with Mr. Surfacer, it happens.

The backpack was difficult in that I had to scribe through Tamiya basic type putty, it's a bit brittle and quite different from scribing plastic. I'm not happy with it but there's nothing I can do.

Spoiler: click to toggle

Details I added at random - PE discs on the knee armor, plastic strips to break up the monotony of the shoulder armor.

Spoiler: click to toggle

I sanded off the raised details on the red part covering the stomache's mega particle guns.

I removed the front half of the head and sanded everything smooth. The point of this is to remove any parts that are visible through the visor. I want nothing inside the head to be visible once the LED is off, everything will be painted matt black.

Hole for the cables to go through:

As I mentioned, the inside of the upper body is naturally completley hollow.

That's all for now. Next, I'll scribe the ass and chest armor. After that it's mostly sanding putty and micro detailing.

Are you planning on adding any detail to the mega particle cannons following the sanding? Perhaps more LEDs? LEDs look really nice on scatter cannons, but what type are the Gogg's?
It annoyed me that I couldn't remember, so I looked for an episode with the Gogg, and it did both scatter and normal beams. Hmm. Scatter seemed the more common though.

I won't be doing more work considering that I feel like it has taken me way too long to get to where I am right now. I do like aesthetic modifications but neither have the time or the patience to do a full out build. ;)

Mini Update: I haven't had much time to make some headway and I didn't take many pictures. All that's left is

- scribing two more parts
- sanding off excess putty
- purchasing remaining parts for LED installation

I expect to have everything primed by thursday afternoon. Three parts were primed to see if puttying was successful - most of it was.

I'm really impresed by your scribing work. Your lines are really sharp and crisp and above all beautifully laid out. They really help to bring the Gogg to life.

Have you any tips you could pass on to someone with absolutely no prior experience with scribing. For example, when scribing a straight line, do you use tape to mark the area you want to scribe and then scribe the line multiple times to acheive the required depth?

In cases where you make a mistake, are there any tips on repairing the damage?

Thanks for the tutorial!!!!!

"Now, repeat this process with the scribing tool. Once again, don't apply pressure or you will slip and scratch the part. Repeat until you have your final panel line."

lol. That's why I stopped scribing because I kept on scratching and coudln't understand why it's not working properly. Thanks for the tip!!!!!!!!

Awesome tutorial NeuesZiel, thanks for posting this.

Once I get my scriber I'm going to practice on a SD kit to perfect the technique before tackling THE-0.

People are always underestimating the uses of a compass.

Great tutorial. I really ought to pick up some Mr. Surfacer for scratches, as I've been either sanding them away, or puttying them. Very awkward.

@TC
If you haven't got one yet, the Tamiya plastic scriber 2 on HLJ is perfect. The reason I say 2 is because they don't sell 1, although I'd imagine that'd be fine too.
It's not really the most demanding use for a tool, so I'd imagine most scribers would work fine.

I actually ordered the Tamiya Scriber II from ebay today so hopefully I'll have a couple of weeks to practice using it before I tackle THE-0.

@NeuesZiel, I particularly like your scribing work on this piece:

Thanks! Believe it or not, most of the panel line designs were made up at random, especially this one. It's the biggest piece with the biggest need for scribing but it actually turned out quite to my liking.
I don't think I've mentioned the purpose of the holes yet. I've drilled several holes in various places, the 1,36mm holes will not remain empty. I will be inlaying beads into these holes, something I've seen on various Japanese modelers' sites. I will use beads in black, gold and silver.

I have nearly all of the parts primed. The only ones that are missing are the arms and hands. I decided to start painting yesterday evenining. First off: the brown parts (there's only 9 but they're huge).
I had some problems initially with my airbrush. I painted two parts and had to quit to disassemble the ab, assess the problem, solve it and mix up new paint. Everything went smoothly from then on. I just finished applying the second and last coat of brown.

Spoiler: click to toggle

I'll be gone during most of the day but I think I can find some time to continue painting tonight. Next up are the light grey parts for the back pack and the dark ones on the feet and knees. The beige parts are up last, they'll require the most work.

Thanks for all of the feedback guys! The brown I'm using is Tamiya XF-10 Flat Brown. This was appliead on the first coat and I mixed in a little bit of XF-57 Buff for the second coat. Smoothness is my highest priority and sadly you can't really see this in the pictures posted above. The last one taken upstairs is better though, it's too dark in the basement.
I was unable to make any more progress yesterday, I'll paint the backpack and feet/knee parts today.

This is minor progress but I thought I'd share it anyway. Backpack parts painted with a mixture of XF-66 and XF-18. Feet/Knees painted with mixture of XF-1 and XF-18.

I had to order the battery container for the LED because I couldn't find one in stores anywhere, I hope it arrives by wednesday.

My plan for the rest of the week:

Monday - Spraying gray internal parts
Tuesday - Masking fingers, priming beige parts with white primer
Wednesday - Painting beige parts, gray details and black for the internal areas
Thursday - Clear coat and decals, panel line washes
Friday - Flat coat, LED installation, additional details

I'm keeping my fingers crossed, I still wanted to finish my Gelgoog project by next Thursday so I have to get done with this one soon.

Well, this is probably the last bit of progress I'll be posting here. The next post will be in the display section.

Everything has been painted, all that's missing is a clear coat, decals, panels and a few flat coats to seal it all in. Some pictures:

Spoiler: click to toggle

The hands are finished, the knuckle joints were painted Gray previously. The head is matt black as well as the sides of the LED.

Spoiler: click to toggle

I'll be assembling quite a few parts before the clear coats, it saves time and money.

Spoiler: click to toggle

Crappy picture of other beige parts, figuring out the color combination was a pain.

Spoiler: click to toggle

Masked off the head to paint recessed area gray.

Spoiler: click to toggle

Inner frame parts were painted Gray from the can, saves lots of time. The black rubberish parts received a coat of PS-5 which is great for elastic stuff.

Spoiler: click to toggle

Assembled backpack.

I'm a bit too lazy to post more pictures. I have a bunch of decal sets with many small warning and caution markings that I love to use. I hope to get the gloss coat on tonight and finish it off tomorrow.

Don't ever say you think models have a tight fit! You haven't seen it all untill you've built and painted this one!

I'll post good pictures in the 'Finished Display' forums tomorrow. As for me, I'm tired - off to bed!
