Patricks day has become over hyped.
Its a church holiday for us irish catholics, i dont like the idea of everyone celebrating it.
Not being mean or anything but what people percieve as St. Partick's day is a total lie.
Its a day to remember the man who supposedly brought christianity to Ireland.
Irish food, drink and leprechauns have nothing to do with it.
(I've a very traditional family)

Sorry for the above rant but i'm very proud of my heritage and feel like its being cheapened with all the giftshop stuff i see.
I wont be able to raise a glass to anyone tonight but next week i'll drink to all the forum members, all 452 of ye.

Thanks Deathscythehellcustom85, I'm in Dublin this evening and will have a pint of Guinness and raise a toast to Gundam Eclipse.

For me, St. Patricks day is an excuse for a bit of fun, and celebrating being Irish. It also raises the profile of Ireland throughout the world, which can't be a bad thing.

I don't understand why our government hasn't properly utilized it as a source of income. I mean, the celebrations for Paddy's Day are way bigger abroad, and ours totally pale in comparison. The way that some people complain about sending ministers abroad for it gets to me too, but whatever. At least they're trying something.

I tend not to wish people a happy Paddy's Day for the reasons ZR0 outlined; there've been so many fellas hanging around Dublin selling goddamn scarves and hats, and I have to pass by that miserable Read's giftshop every day. The amount of people who buy that rubbish astounds me.

Still, just because I don't agree with it doesn't mean I can't enjoy it. A few (read: many) pints with the lads is easier on Paddy's Day due to it being a holiday, and the fact that drink tends to be really cheap. Had to take it easier this year due to budgeting (law reports don't pay for themselves), but whatever.

EDIT: The best animated Irishman would be Lancer, by the way. Cú Chulainn is about as Irish as you can get.

Happy St. Patricks day to all.

I'm in Dublin at the moment, the sun is shining and everyone is enjoying the day and waiting for the parade to start.

Happy St. Patrick's Day
Came to school without anything green so I just grabbed a random pin from my bag and stuck it on my sweater. (Random Green alien head.)
I just remembered that I always carry around my bag which is an olive green right now.

I agree with ZRO, St. Patrick's Day has become a holiday which most people have no idea what it means. My mom used to celebrate it way back in the day because she was married to a Irish man, but from what I heard, he was a idiot. And yeah, what is it with the stupid pinching? I never understood that concept.

But nonetheless, Happy St. Patrick's Day if you celebrate it, I guess.

I really should look up if there are any Polish holidays.

Oh, here's a theory about the pinching.

Quote:

It's thought that the pinching started in the early 1700s, about the time that awareness of St. Patrick's as a holiday came to the fore, too, in Boston, in the Massachusetts colony. They thought if you wore green, it made you invisible to the Leprechauns, which was good because they would pinch anyone they could see. So the pinching is to warn and remind you about the Leprechauns.

Pinching those not wearing green on St. Patrick's Day is an American tradition, having really nothing to do with Ireland or St. Patrick Wrong. I have lived in Ireland. The truth is, Irish people think Americans are crazy. St. Patrick's Day is not even remotely celebrated over there as heavily as it is in the US.

I've never really understood the concept of pinch as well, always thought it was a way for kids to tease each other.
